Basement waterproofing products abound now compared to a few years ago. It is nothing new to encounter more home or property owners on the do-it-yourself home forums chattering on about this. If you’ve got water in your basement from running the sprinkler, or if it comes in from the rain that you get you have a lot of company that also experience this.
Wouldn’t you like a finished basement which are now called “Media Rooms” or “Family Rooms”? Sure anyone would love to tap into free square footage. But before you get that Sony big screen television and have water come and ruin your investment please consider basement waterproofing products.
The biggest tip given here comes from years of experience with dealing with water in the basement. Every year for the first thaw all the way to the spring drying out period water would enter the basement. This was such a drag because it meant more work. More mold and you know just an insecure feeling.
If you want to do it yourself you could have a try at it. We’ll give you some tips shortly. But suffice it to say that some things are worth trying to do yourself. Other things you’d be way better off just hiring it out to a concrete specialist or basement waterproofing contractor. These folks specialize in dealing with and fixing concrete problems day and day out. Your case is probably not unique. So, get on the forums and message boards and try to find someone that services your area.
Now if you want to do it yourself. This job is going to be like any other household painting job.
First, prepare the surface that has the loose mortar and cracks by brushing away the lose stones with a firm wire brush.
Second, fill in any gaps or wholes as best you can with some redi quick type mortar filler.
Third, you may need to prime that surface (waterproofing grade primer only) you just added mortar to in order to get it ready for painting.
Fourth, start painting with a waterproofing type paint.
We do not advise you to do this yourself. But if you cannot afford the few thousand dollars they may charge this probably is worth a try.
As you can see the steps for the do it yourself variety is not many. But the results are what you want to strongly consider. What will the finished product be and will it hold the water out? Only time and water will tell.
